The Binary Conundrum is a series of 10 binary art pieces which were posted all across the billboards of the Champlain College campus, as a part of my Creative Media Portfolio II class.
The project came about from my fascination with binary code, my budding fascinations with digital art, and my eventual discovery of binary art.
The original version of TBC was very splintered, and there was no real focus. Random phrases and the like were broken down into binary code with the help of an online translator, and was then overlaid on top of a digital art painting.
Soon after, I began to feel a bit distant with the world, and considered the idea of an emissary reaching out from beyond the cosmos to seek out a special person. Going from that, I created 10 short dialogue phrases which hinted at something like a greater good (like a "secret to the world", a reference to the Little Busters visual novel/anime series), and rolled with the concept.
As I began to learn more about binary art, the pieces evolved from just text overlaid onto paintings, to becoming actual elements of the paintings themselves.
The Binary Conundrum is something I framed as "augmented reality" storytelling, where something which clearly didn't exist in reality was reaching out to our very real world in hopes of finding some. It also was created as a way to understand language barriers, and "new-age" social behavior, in regards to how distant we can feel- even with technology and globalization pushing people even closer together than before.
All 10 pieces are shown in their original forms in the slideshow below, and in due time, a second slideshow will be added to showcase the pieces in the outside world.
The website linked on each piece directed to a special blog dedicated to The Binary Conundrum, which acted as the hub for the emissary character, as she speaks in binary about her messages.
